Endocrinology Fellowship

This subspecialty training program in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism is designed to provide advanced training and experience at a level for the trainee to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and experience required for all competencies needed by a consultant in this field. This program is designed to fulfill the needs of those trainees who anticipate their future activities to be solely the clinical practice of this specialty, those who expect to function as clinician-educators and those who intend to pursue careers as clinician-scientists. The teaching environment and educational experiences for trainees, detailed below, will equip them to become strong clinicians, educators, and investigators.

Great emphasis is given to education during the training. Didactic sessions are provided to the endocrine fellows and these include: core lectures, endocrinology grand rounds on a weekly basis, monthly journal club, endocrinology board review on a weekly basis, and multidisciplinary conferences.

The endocrine division plays the leading role in the following multidisciplinary conferences:

• Pituitary
• Bone and mineral metabolism
• Thyroid and parathyroid diseases

The endocrine fellows provide inpatient consultation at the University and VA hospitals. In the outpatient setting, they attend clinics at both institutions. These clinics include continuity clinic, general endocrine, diabetes, thyroid ultrasound-FNA, pituitary, lipid, obesity, and hypertension clinics.

Regarding diabetes, extensive training is given on insulin pumps and analysis and interpretation of continuous glucose monitoring.

Outside the division, the endocrine fellows also rotate in pediatric endocrinology, reproductive endocrinology, and nuclear medicine - private practice and additional electives.

Regarding research and scholarly activities, the Division of Endocrinology has a vast number of publications in peer-reviewed journals over the past five years. The endocrine fellows are encouraged to acquire skills in design and performance of hypothesis-driven endocrine research and to participate in such research or equivalent scholarly activity. This may include gaining experience in grant writing and scientific presentation. In past years, the Research Fellow of the Year award in the Department of Medicine has been given to an endocrine fellow.
